Today we’ve found wedding inspiration in a not-so traditional floral element, cotton! Cotton is a great option to spice up your bouquet, boutonnieres and centerpieces – and it’s sure to have your guests talking. (You might remember this inspiration post that we did on ways to incorporate raw cotton into your wedding!)

We are lucky here in the DC area because we have a local company Floral Cotton, based in Maryland, that can help you add this natural product to your wedding. Florists, Gerry and Rebecca, at Petal’s Edgerecently worked with material from Floral Cotton and Michelle Lindsay to brainstorm some modern and unique ideas and ways to use cotton at a wedding.

From Petal’s Edge: When you think of floral arrangements, cotton is likely not the first thing that comes to mind. Similar to other organic, but non-floral elements, that have become popular – fruit, seed pods, succulents and berries to name a few – cotton can add an unusual texture and style to floral arrangements.

 

 

There are several reasons cotton makes a great element for use in floral design, even outside of its luscious texture. Although it is primarily harvested in September and October, it is available throughout the year, because it is essentially a dried product that does not require refrigeration. Unlike other floral design products, while cotton is grown in other countries, it is unlikely to be imported in floral form making it a truly American product.

Cotton is delicate, which lends a light, ethereal look in a floral arrangement, but it is also sturdy. An all-cotton bridal bouquet, for example, is immediately preserved. Cotton is so versatile that it can be paired with both fresh, dried or silk flowers, and can play both center stage and supporting roles in designs.

 

So luscious and dreamy! I hope that you are inspired by all the different ways to use cotton at your wedding. Keep in mind, that cotton is also a great (and affordable option) for winter weddings when fresh flowers are the hardest to come by.
